Reading Challenge Reflection 1 – Genesis 1-3

Some in our church have accepted a challenge to read through the Bible in a year. I plan to write periodic reflections on readings (hopefully at least a couple of times a week but no promises). Today’s reading was Genesis 1-3, the Creation and Fall.

It happens that my reading of Mark Moore’s Core 52 also covered the Fall today. One of the points that he made was the idea of sin’s price tag. Satan did not, and does not, reveal the real price of sin during temptation. I have reflected on that idea most of the day. I have thought about some relationships that I have destroyed because of I was selfish. I think about some of the challenges I have faced when I have impulsively bought things I didn’t really need. I thought about the price friends of mine have had to pay because of the sins they have committed.

On the converse, I remember consequences I haven’t had to face, a price I didn’t have to pay when I did the right thing. I have friends that started down the wrong way, sin’s way, but stopped before the price was too high. Sometimes we get away (or think we get away) with a sin, but it sets and eats at us. Often the price is extracted somewhere down the road.

The good news is that God offers us with a way out of our temptations, 1 Corinthians 10:13. At the end of the day when we have done it God’s way and not our own, and that is really what the Fall was all about, victory is sweet.
