Discovering – Third Sunday of Advent

Text:

Luke 2;16, So {the shepherds} hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.

Devotion:

Last week, we talked about seeking. This week, the theme is discovery. The shepherds sought the child the angels announced. We don’t know how long it took to find the child, but find him they did. Amongst the stable animals, off the beaten path, away from the noise and busyness of an inn were a young mother, a new father and a baby. Their search had been rewarded. Luke does not tell us about their response. It is safe to say worship was certainly involved. Wisemen would bring gifts, the shepherds we know not.
As we come to Advent, we make discoveries as well. Advent is about a baby born 2000 years ago, born to die. Advent is about a Savior to return one day. One discovery made, one yet to happen. And between the two we discover the gift of worship.
